Holy Trinity churchyard

Weathered stone, and twists
of barley sugar sunlight;
arthritic trees and flaking table tombs.
The evening turns to amber.

Empty now. The visitors have left –
families who’ve come to look at
something old, then ease their aching feet-
foreign students eager to move on.

All gone.
The residents appear among their canted gravestones:

And others wait in shadows, watch
darkness fall from the air
on the last place they belonged to.
